Web Hosting Sending Email.

Sending Email

When setting up an account in Outlook or Outlook Express I get an error saying unable to connect to my SMTP server.

This is likely because your ISP is blocking port 25. Many ISPs are now blocking traffic on port 25 not using their servers. You can do one of two things:

1. Enable secure authentication (SSL) for smtp and use port 465
2. Use the smtp server provided by your isp.

If you enable secure authentication and don't change the mail server, you will get an error stating a certificate mismatch. The only way around this prompt every time you send email is to change the outgoing server to the box you are on. Each server has a self-signed certificate for the box name so you will get a warning the first time you connect. If you accept, you won't get any further warnings.

Why do my email messages keep getting returned?

If your emails keep getting returned with the message "Unrouteable Domain", then you have exceeded your hourly limit for outbound mail.

There is a default limit on all accounts of 50 messages sent per hour. This is a policy to help control spam on the internet and does not apply to your inbound email. You can receive as many emails as will fit in the accounts quota.

Can I send an email with large files/attachments?

There is a 10MB limit on emails sent out. If you have an attachement that is larger than 10MB you can upload the file to your site and send the link/URL to that file, within your email.

To send a file that is larger than 10MB via email will have to compress your file or break it into seperate rar or zip files in order to send the file via email.

  • Navigate to your Eudora install directory.
  • Look in the Eudora directory for the directory "extrastuff".
  • In this directory is a file named "esoteric.epi". Drag (copy or move) this file into the main Eudora directory. There will now be options extra listed, including a Ports page.

To change the outgoing mail port from 25 to 26:

  • Launch Eudora
  • Drop down the Tools menu, and choose Options
  • Click on Ports
  • Change the port from 25 to 26
  • Click OK

Eudora for Mac

Why do e-mails from my webpage come from < username > @ <## > .<>.com when I have specified otherwise?

This is because many hosting companies servers require you (or your script) to use a properly formatted, valid From: header in your email. If the From: header is not formatted correctly, empty or invalid system will change the from address to be <username>@<##>.<>.com. To stop this, you must change the script you are using to correctly use a valid From header.

Examples of headers that should work would be:
From: user@domain.com
From: <user@domain.com>
From: "name" <user@domain.com>

Examples of headers that will NOT work:
From: "user@domain.com"
From: user @ domain.com

I get an error sending with Thunderbird, I can receive fine and I tried sending on Port 26 and it still doesn't work. How do I fix this problem?

This error is most commonly caused by McAfee Antivirus, if you have McAfee running on your system then you can follow these steps.

Procedure:

Right-click on the McAfee System Tray icon › Select VirusScan Console…

Double-click Access Protection.

Select Prevent mass mailing worms from sending mail. Be sure not to uncheck this box.
Click on the Edit button.

Add a comma at the end of the text box at the bottom of the window and then add THUNDE~1.exe. DO NOT PUT A SPACE BETWEEN THIS AND THE PREVIOUS ENTRY.

Click OK.

Click OK.

Close the VirusScan Console window.

After this has been completed, you should be able to send e-mail again from Thunderbird.
